Player Assessment

At Bend South Little League, our goal is to create a positive, competitive, and sportsmanship-focused environment for every player. Developmental Divisions (T-Ball, Farm, Rookies): Team formation is centered on fun, learning, building friendships, and school/friend placement requests. No assessments or drafts take place for these levels. Competitive Divisions (Minors, Majors, Juniors): We utilize player assessments and a structured draft process to ensure balanced teams, fair matchups, and consistent skill development across the league. What to Expect at Assessments 💙 No Cuts, No Stress: Skill assessments are not tryouts. Every registered child makes a team! Assessments simply evaluate player skill levels so managers can draft balanced rosters. Assessment Checklist for Parents & Players: What to Wear: Athletic clothing and tennis shoes / turf shoes (cleats are strictly prohibited inside the field house turf facility). What to Bring: Baseball/softball glove. All other necessary equipment (bats, helmets, balls) will be provided. Arrival: Check in at the registration desk upon arrival to receive your player number tag, then begin warm-up throwing with a buddy. Parent Viewing: Parents are welcome to stay and watch but must remain outside the netting area so coaches can lead the session directly. Divisional Play-Up Requests: Players requesting to play up in a higher division must attend the assessment session for the division they wish to join to complete a mandatory safety evaluation. Evaluated Skill Sets: Players will receive scores from 1 to 5 across core fundamentals: Base Running Fielding & Catching Throwing Accuracy & Arm Strength Batting Mechanics Intangibles: Focus, hustle, and positive attitude. ⚠️ Absence Policy: If your player cannot attend mandatory assessments, please notify our Player Agent immediately at [email protected]. Unassessed players cannot be selected during the draft and will be assigned to rosters via random drawing after all other players are drafted. Manager & Coach Assessment Instructions Coaches and managers evaluating players during assessments must adhere to the following protocol: Check in at the registration desk upon arrival to receive your official assessment clipboard and roster sheets. Please bring your own pen/pencil. Evaluate each athlete objectively on mechanics, execution, and effort to assist with draft board preparation. Player Selection Draft Protocol The competitive division draft is managed by the BSLL Player Agent alongside a neutral Board Member for quality control. Randomized Snake Draft OrderDraft position determinationManagers draw numbers (1 through N) to determine selection order. The draft follows a standard Snake Draft format (e.g., 1 through 6 in Round 1, reversing to 6 down to 1 in Round 2). Manager & Coach Child SelectionsRules for Manager & Coach children Manager's Child: Automatically drafted as the team's 1st Round pick. Declared Coach's Child: Automatically drafted as the team's 2nd Round pick (or subsequent round for additional declared coaches). Sibling PlacementKeeping families togetherSiblings in the same division are drafted to the same team unless explicitly requested otherwise by parents. Once one sibling is selected, the second sibling is automatically claimed in the next consecutive round. Draft Trades & Final Roster LocksFinalizing team rostersOnly Head Managers (or approved designated coaches) may attend the draft room. All roster trades must occur before leaving the draft room. Once adjourned, all team rosters are deemed final and locked. Frequently Asked Questions When will we hear from our team coach? Managers will receive their locked draft rosters immediately following draft day and will reach out to families within 48–72 hours to share practice schedules and team details. Who do I contact if I have questions about division placement or assessments? Please contact our Player Agent directly at [email protected].
